Story & Philosophy

Story

Burhani Foundation (India) was established in 1992 to commemorate the 80th birthday of the late His Holiness Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, the 52nd head of the Dawoodi Bohra community. The foundation is a registered trust, dedicated to furthering the community’s endeavours for environmental awareness and research. Today, under the guidance of the 53rd head of the community, His Holiness Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin, the foundation strives to foster a clean, green and sustainable environment for people and the planet.

Philosophy

The foundation is committed to unwavering environmental responsibility. The bounties of nature are a gift of the Almighty. They were entrusted to man so that he may enrich his life with them, and he in turn is obligated to preserve these bounties from abuse and harm. With this understanding, the Dawoodi Bohra community strives to do its part in ensuring that the planet and all the bounties of nature are safeguarded not just for the health and well-being of the current generation but for that of generations to come.

“All Creation is a family dependent on Allah Ta’ala. The most beloved of all Creation to Him, therefore, is the one who benefits His family the most.”

Prophet Mohammed ( SAW )

Man has been called the most noble of all Creation. Therefore, each individual is obligated to work towards the betterment of all Creation, including the environment he lives in, and make himself worthy of being called the most noble of all Creation.

Our Legacy

EXCERPT FROM THE ADDRESS DELIVERED BY SYEDNA MOHAMMED BURHANUDDIN AT TURF CLUB, MUMBAI NOVEMBER 1991

Distinguished guests, today, apprehension pervades the global situation and an atmosphere of pessimism and fear prevails. At such a time, it is only through compassion and humanity that we may shut the door on imminent devastation and advance the causes of peace, prosperity and progress.

Respected guests!

The pledge made by my followers to celebrate the occasion of my 80th birthday – by establishing a foundation for environmental research – is much more than a cause for happiness: it will eventually become, Allah willing, a memorable and historic undertaking.

Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin
